Quilting without fabric

This week’s City Crafter challenge is “cottage quilt” and the inspiration photo’ provides the colour palette.  The Design Team samples are amazing so it was quite a daunting task to come up with something of my own as they had set the bar very high! However, it’s all about having fun and trying out new ideas and so …

P1040671I found out quite quickly that I have a surprising dearth of red patterned papers, except for Christmassy ones. I tried everything to source a new supply – the inside of book jackets, cupcake cases, wrapping paper stash… but nothing. Eventually I found some bits that were serviceable and went about punching seven squares in blues and reds.  I cut out two separate squares  of deep blue to mount them on and then joined the two together to create the centre piece. Finally I layered the whole thing up on red card.  I used miniature doillies to create a border.

P1040677With the pearls, it was a case of less is more – it didn’t look right to attach them at every square. I threaded a button with red thread and used this to secure the sentiment.

The hardest part was what to do with the centre. I’d planned on using flowers, but they didn’t really work, then I hit upon the idea of a little heart and the lace bow.

Hope you’ve had a good week. Today I’ve really got that Friday, feeling as tomorrow Mr Beez and I are going on holiday!

  1. This is so pretty and reminds me of a vintage practice piece done by a child and framed by their proud parent. Actually, this is the only way you would get me quilting, I am rubbish at the real thing.

    Have a fantastic holiday.
